The Dog Registry

The Dog Registry

A dog registry is a record of the genealogy of the various dogs that breeders have applied to be included there. Being a breeding database, for a dog that is registered, it is possible to trace its ancestors many generations back. This allows a breeder to study, understand and decide on breeding options that he may take should he choose to breed his dog with a most suitable mate in the hope of further developing his breeding line and produce puppies that will typify the breed standard. The PCCI Registry has, for many decades, been a closed one, which means that only offspring of dogs that are already included in its own Registry or those that are properly covered by proper documentation from other recognized Kennel Clubs may be registered. However, in line with the direction of the FCI, with whom the PCCI is affiliated, the latter has allowed the limited listing of undocumented dogs that would pass the scrutiny of PCCI’s licensed judges in terms of how close the said specimens are to the description given in the breed’s standard. And only with the continuous breeding to a PCCI registered dog and the succeeding generation of offspring to other registered dogs, until the fourth such generation is produced, will the latest batch of puppies (from the fourth generation onwards) be issued official Pedigree Certificates and accepted into the roll of pedigreed dogs. Thus, it may be said that registering a puppy or dog whose parents are in turn, registered either with the PCCI or with other recognized Registering Bodies is quite straightforward. Registering a puppy with one or both parents not having acceptable registration documents will have only one option left and that is to have said puppy pass inspection and be included in the Listing Program. The status of registration in any kennel club provides a very good indicator of the vibrancy of a Club. Since clubs like the PCCI have pledged to promote the responsible breeding and keeping of purebred dogs, an increasing trend in the number of new dogs being registered augurs well for such clubs.
